AHTA Annual Conference
2008 Annual Conference - October 30 - November 1
Lexington, Kentucky
Dr. Nilda Cosco presented the keynote address at the 2008 AHTA Annual Conference entitled Connecting Young Children to Nature: From Research to Practice.
Dr. Cosco explained that children learn both about the functional properties of the environment and about themselves by interacting with the natural surroundings that can be a powerful source of stimulation. Welcoming, natural spaces for young children are critical for supporting play, counteracting sedentary lifestyles, and establishing strong connections with the natural world early on. The design of natural spaces for early childhood is a challenging task because of the scarcity of innovative models. This presentation reviewed the research supporting the need for young children's contact with nature and showcased state-of-the-art spaces for play and learning in nature.
